Imo State Lifts Ban on Town Union Elections, Commissioner Clarifies Directive

Following the announcement by the Executive Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, lifting the long-standing ban on Town Union Government elections, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Rubby Emele, has issued a clarification to ensure proper public understanding.

The Governor made the announcement on January 17, 2026, during a meeting with traditional rulers in Owerri. He explained that lifting the embargo would help strengthen grassroots governance, improve accountability, and support community development.

He also directed the Ministry to create clear and transparent guidelines for conducting elections, ensuring all communities follow their constitutions.

Investigations revealed that elections conducted during the ban have been declared invalid. The Governor also criticized the practice of appointing President Generals instead of electing them.

However, Commissioner Emele clarified that not all communities must conduct new elections. The directive only applies to those where the tenure of the President General has expired.

She advised affected communities to apply officially for approval before conducting elections and to wait for confirmed dates from the Ministry.
