Hip Hop Caucus attended COP28 with a mission: to raise our voices from the streets to the suites and demand action on climate change that addresses the harms our community is facing.

It was just announced that the nations that attended COP28 have signed a historic agreement to “transition away” from fossil fuels and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

This is what happens when we raise our voices. Hip Hop Caucus spent the last couple of weeks on the ground standing side by side with people from the Gulf South to the Global South demanding a fair, fast, and full phase out from fossil fuels. We met with diplomats and disruptors, organizing in hallways and hotel lobbies and this is the result.

While the agreement may not have presented a full phase-out from fossil fuels, this is the first time in 28 conferences of the parties that all fossil fuels – coal, oil, and gas – have been mentioned and called for being transitioned away from.

What’s more important is that this signals a shifting tide, and proves that when we stand united we can affect change. Now we have to hold them to their promises.
